Katwijk aan Zee
Sea, sand, sports, culture and shopping: You will enjoy it in Katwijk!
General
Heroics and fisherman's sorrow, flying flags and catching your breath on the beach. This is Katwijk, where tradition
reigns side by side with the 21st century. Sports are ubiquitous and there is a lively shopping mall with bars and
restaurants. But all the same, consuming a nice herring on the beautiful boulevard may be the most concise image of
Katwijk. After a bicycle ride through the dunes or a walk on the beach with the family. That makes Katwijk Refreshingly
Different.
Every season in Katwijk is filled with events. The Week of the Sea in May has myriads of activities. During the summer
Katwijk offers the weekly Tourist Market and the annual Demonstration of the Lifeboat Brigade in August is a spectacular
sight you don't want to miss! And music lovers can enjoy a number of organs, pop and jazz concerts.
Tradition & History
Katwijk bears all the traditions of a fisher's village. The impressive Katwijks Museum treats the story of sea fishery,
in which many inhabitants through the ages lost their lives, but which also brought great gains. Just think of the
folkloristic costumes or the shanty choirs which still can be seen and heard. The museum also tells the story of
Brittenburg, the Roman fort at the coast of Katwijk, now engulfed by the sea.
Nature
Thanks to the dunes and the water area close by, you can enjoy the most beautiful cycling and walking routes in the surrounding
of Katwijk. The nature here invites you to make a long trip. The dunes of Katwijk and the boulevard are part of the many routes
along the coast, the river Oude Rijn and through the flower areas. At the local tourist information (called VVV), book and
bicycle shops you can get maps and route descriptions.
A very popular short route is the cycling tour through the dunes to the city Noordwijk or the route to the coastal city
Scheveningen.
Sightseeing
Katwijk has several monuments with are a visit worth. From the lighthouse "De Vuurbaak" the visitors have a beautiful view
over Katwijk aan Zee, the beach and the surrounding area. Not far away from there you will find the white church, named Andreaskerk.
The church together with the courtyard Andreashofje are a picturesque oneness.
In an old ship owners villa at the Voorstraat you will find the museum of Katwijk. Several expositions are giving you a good impression
of the old city of Katwijk. In Katwijk aan de Rijn you can see many other monuments of the past. Visit for example De Roskam, the
picturesque Koningshofje, De Wilbert, the Jewish cemetery, the church or the historical windmill De Gerechtigheid.
Shopping
Katwijk has over 40.000 inhabitants. Yet the congenial atmosphere of a village can be found at the popular shopping centre.
Join the ever-friendly populace in quaint shopping streets, like the Zeezijde, right behind the boulevard. Terraces galore
provide the necessary resting places. And after a well-spent day you can sleep in a choice of accommodations, ranging from
hotels, camp sites and boarding houses to holiday homes and apartments. You can be certain you are welcome in lovely Katwijk.
Every week there is a local market at the Market Square of Katwijk. During the summer season there are as well several tourist
markets where you can by many typical and special products. The horse markets of Valkenburg and Rijnsburg is very special
to see and are just once a year.
